It has been estimated that up to 12 million letters and parcels were delivered to soldiers and sailors during the First World War and for some reason this became the responsibility of the Royal Engineers Postal Section with personnel working both in Britain and in the various theatres of war. However, the GPO kept overall responsibility for this enormous operation and there are many sources available to find out more about this very important aspect of the war, essential for keeping the morale of the troops high. J Checketts died from unspecified causes on 6th November, 1914, while serving with the Royal Engineers Postal Section in France. |
